Your water should smell clean and refreshing, not smelly!
If you are smelling a rotten egg smell in your hot water, it could be coming from your water heater. Anaerobic bacteria and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas could be causing that smell. A bacteria called “Divibrio Sulfurcans” converts naturally occurring sulfates in the water to the gas. The bacteria is nontoxic, but it can affect the taste and odor of water.
In addition, a Magnesium anode rod in a hot water heater can also cause unpleasing H2S gas. When the Magnesium rod corrodes, it can chemically reduce naturally occurring sulfates into the gas.
